High Voltage Operations Course
This is a 5-day training course for anyone who is being considered for authorisation to work on electrical systems either as an authorised person or a senior authorised person. Feedback will provide employers with valuable information to support any authorisation process.
Based on the DNO Distribution safety rules, by the end of this course attendees will
- Understand the key hazards of electricity and how danger may arise
- Understand how behavioural factors affect your working practices and approach to risks
- Have a knowledge of current safety legislation associated with the control and operation of a high voltage system
- Understand high voltage switchgear designs and their ratings
- Understand of how to plan high voltage work and the steps necessary to create safe work zones
- Have practice creating switching schedules for the safe operation on high voltage systems and other electrical safety documentation
- Carry out desk top exercises on planning complex operations and writing electrical safety documentation to support this work
- Gain practical experience understanding cable works, including techniques for cable identification, making safe at the point of work by spiking cables, phase rotation and pressure testing
- Understand the principles of protection and typical devices used
- Gain practical switching experience on various types of high voltage equipment
There are two formal assessments for this course run to a C&G standard; a desk top exercise to plan a switching activity and issue safety documentation, then a multi-choice exam on the topics discussed in the course.
